Dr. Don Fong, OD

Dr. Fong spent 24 formative years in the small steel mill town of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, home town of several famous personalities such as Henry Mancini, Mike Ditka, “Tony Dorsett”, and “Pistol Pete” Maravich. During his formative years he was strongly influenced by his father and Pastor Woodward of the Woodlawn Presbyterian Church, who provided countless hours of lessons and exchanges in wisdom that would shape his work ethic.

He attended Geneva College, Beaver Falls, PA, graduating with BS degrees in Biology and Chemistry in 1973. In 1974 he also earned a BS in physiological optics. A family friend who suffered from advance macular degeneration had a profound influence on his career to become an Optometrist. In 1977, Dr. Fong graduated with his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry followed by a post-doctoral residency at the Gesell Institute, New Haven, CT. He was awarded the AM Skeffington Award in 1978, and holds Optometric licenses in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and California.

In 1979 Dr. Fong relocated to his current practice location across from Mercy Hospital. He is a charter member of the Neuro Optometric Rehabilitation Association, International (N.O.R.A.) since 1992 and has served a board member, secretary, and President with 18 years of service. He has also been a member of the American Optometric Association since 1977 along with membership in the Sacramento Valley Optometric Society and the California Optometric Association.

Locally, Dr. Fong has been involved with the Capitol Lions International for 34 years and participates in the service organization’s outreach to the Sacramento Community, the recipient of the Akio Hayashi Life Member and has also been a member of the Sacramento Executive Association, and Optimist Club.

Dr. Fong also regularly presents on a broad range of vision related topics especially pertaining to stroke and traumatic brain injury. When not attending conferences, Dr. Fong has a passion for photography. His favorite subjects have been bridges, natural formations, the Navy Blue Angels, and New York City.
